M Our survey says - ringing the changes A platform for growth
Following a survey sent out late in 2009, the BICSc Midlands Committee has been working on various suggestions made by respon- dents. Key changes include: meetings will be held closer to Birmingham; meetings will avoid school holidays; and future meeting content will reflect the suggestions of members.
In response to these suggestions, from Tuesday 12 October, meetings will move to a new venue. In partnership with Birmingham
Metropolitan College, sessions will be run at the new home of the Vocational and Environmental department on the BMC Castle Vale Campus, situated in north east Birmingham. External speakers will be invited to complement sessions provided by members and colleagues. The committee is also in negotiation with training providers with a hospitality background who will participate in Study Days to broaden the sessions.
MITIE has won a cleaning contract with First Great Western (FGW) to clean trains and stations. The new cleaning contract covers 109 train stations across the country from Paddington in London to Penzance in Cornwall.
The three-year cleaning contract, with a total value of £12.6 million, started in late April 2010 with approximately 300 people transferring to MITIE. The contract consists of four lots,

Full steam ahead for MITIE West, Central and East regions for FGW and will mainly revolve
around train and station cleaning while Paddington and Old Oak Common in London will mainly deliver train cleaning. Johan Venter, managing director of MITIE's transport cleaning business, said: "We are delighted to be working with such a prestigious company as First Great Western. MITIE has a great track record of working with blue chip organisations in the transport sector and we regard this as a vote of confidence in our abilities."
The recession has made many UK contract cleaning compa- nies look internally at business processes and systems, and many are waking up to the reality that improved systems allow for business growth and cut unnecessary waste. Templa Computer Systems Ltd, a software development company established in 1977, launched Templa-CMS in the Spring of last year. It is a fully integrated contract management system specifically designed for UK contract cleaning companies. The industry was seeking a modern, well-supported solution to replace the use of multiple, non- specific systems and Templa-CMS is now being rolled out at four key cleaning companies across the UK, with more on the way.
These include: Exclusive Contracts, Hertfordshire; Glen Cleaning, Bristol; and Kentklean, Maidstone. Rick Stoor, MD of Templa, said: “As an added advantage to the industry we bring our ability and track record of listening to customers’ needs and our commitment to growing and adapting Templa-CMS in line with this. The great benefit our company offers this industry is our quality-led development team who have been delivering reliable and trusted software to our UK and overseas customers for more than 30 years.”
