M Daytime Cleaning We’ve got the power

Daytime cleaning has become more popular for reasons relating to staff costs, staff availability, security, out of hours heating and lighting. There is also a need in public areas to keep floors clean and safe when people are around. In some cases it is a question of maintaining the image of the site and others safety, especially when wet outside. Nick Meredith, UK and Ireland general manager at Tennant UK, said: “The issues that have inhibited daytime cleaning have related to availability of battery powered machines throughout the day, mobility of the machines and the ability to leave the floor dry. Tennant has always been market leaders when it

comes to cleaning

technology innovation and has developed several technologies that help make daytime cleaning viable. The most important is keeping the floors clean and dry. Tennant has achieved this through its patented ec-h20 technology which uses up to 70% less water than conventional scrubber dryers and absolutely no chemical.” It is usually chemical residue that causes slip and fall accidents, especially when wet. Tennant uses electricity to change the properties of water to take on the cleaning properties of a detergent without any of the slip factor or harmful waste. This unique cleaning method has become well established in the retail area

The combination of water efficient technology that extends the period between emptying and refilling water tanks, safe, quick drying cleaning technology and Fast Charge batteries provide an efficient daytime cleaning solution for businesses.

since its launch two years ago and has won many business and technology awards. This technology dramatically improves safety when operated in public areas and has allowed business to clean during the day with confidence. Another huge benefit to daytime cleaning is fast charging battery technology. Traditional batteries will run for two to three hours and then need six to eight hours recharge time before they can be used again. Failure to keep to approved charging cycles can be expensive as batteries will wear out much quicker than they should and have to be replaced. The new Fast Charge batteries are different. They use new technology that allows the battery to be recharged at any time without any detrimental affect on performance or life. The recharge time is also much faster. The battery

charge can be topped up at any time when the operator is not using the machine, for example when emptying and refilling the water tanks or when on a break. The top up is usually enough to keep the machine going until the next interval. However, even if fully discharged, the battery will recharge in around 70 minutes.

Meredith concluded: “The use of Fast Charge batteries can increase the available productivity of a single machine enormously. It can be used all through the day and will always be available to clean up any spills that may occur. Furthermore, the combination of water efficient technology that extends the period between emptying and refilling water tanks, safe, quick drying cleaning technology and Fast Charge batteries provide an efficient daytime cleaning solution for businesses.” www.tennantco.com

Meeting the demands of daytime cleaning

more sustainable footing. As well as environmental benefits, it enables cleaners to work day shifts and for cleaning contractors to provide a greater range of services.

Large retail organisations have led the way in daytime cleaning, particularly the major supermarkets. It is common to see cleaning in progress when doing the household shopping. But, of course, this does introduce health and safety issues, since it is - in most cases - essential that the cleaning is done with cordless, battery powered machines, and that no wet, or even damp floors are left as a potential cause of accidents.

An example of a UK machine manufacturer seeking to lead the market in machines for daytime cleaning is Truvox International. Already established in battery-powered high-speed single-disc burnishing machines for hard polished floors with its Orbis UHS 1500 cordless rotary burnisher, Truvox launched at Interclean in April a new addition to its range of scrubber dryers - the com- pact Orbis battery scrubber dryer powered by a minimum-main- tenance rechargeable 24V gel battery.

A scrubber dryer for small or middle sized areas, the new Orbis battery scrubber has a 17 litre solution tank with adjustable solution flow and a 22-litre recovery tank - probably the largest capacity on the market for a scrubber drier of this size. It is therefore capable of longer continuous spells of work than some competitive compact machines. It will be particularly useful for the growing daytime cleaning market, for obvious health and safety reasons, and to contract cleaners because the battery power frees them from the need to gain access to power points.

Easier to empty

A further practical benefit is that the new Orbis scrubber dryer has a larger than normal dirty water tank opening, so emptying and cleaning the tank is easier than you would expect and uses less effort. Supplied with two 28 A/h batteries as standard, typi- cal battery run time is 90 minutes, and additional batteries can be supplied on request. Recharging from a mains outlet takes about 10 hours. The battery can be quickly and easily changed, so contract cleaners who purchase additional gel batteries can work more or less continuously with a brief break of about five minutes for a change of battery every one and a half hours. The machine is designed to clean at a rate of up to 1100 square metres per hour, and is ideal for shops, restaurants, car show- rooms, healthcare premises, schools, workshops and gymna- siums. These are also markets where the Orbis rotary burnish- ers have achieved success. Truvox research and

development is constantly active and has plans to launch a pure lead battery version of the Orbis battery scrubber later in the year. Other new and innovative products are in the pipeline. www.truvox.com
