MITIE launches graduate leadership programme
MITIE has announced its first graduate leadership programme designed to identify the future leaders of the business and fast-track them into management across the company. “A career with MITIE will give the most talented graduates the opportunity to experience every aspect of our business first hand and to lead sizeable teams early on in their careers,” said Ruby McGregor-Smith, chief executive of MITIE. “Our 56,000 employees are our greatest asset and deserve the very best leadership. We are seeking graduates with the passion, personality, ambition and hands-on attitude to ensure the MITIE success story continues into the future.”
During the 12 month programme the graduates will work closely with a senior manager or director to develop their customer care, financial and leadership skills. Each will spend time working within business development, operations, project management, HR and marketing and communications, ensuring the broadest exposure to all aspects of a fast-growing FTSE 250 business.

Record levels of cleanliness recorded in Britain’s beach survey
A record number of beaches in England and Wales have been graded at Europe's ‘excellent’ standard - the highest possible - according to the annual cleanliness sur- vey conducted by the Environment Agency. The survey, which tests the water quality and litter levels at 494 designated bathing sites, revealed that Britain is now enjoying its cleanest beaches for 10 years. The latest findings are a 2% improvement on 2008, continuing the trend which has seen seawater and beach cleanliness increase for the past 20 years.
The monitoring of Britain’s coast found that 97% reached ‘excellent’ standard, a tally put down to dry weather with limited run-off into the sea, and a sustained drive against farm chemical and sewer pollution.
Steve Wright, chairman of the British Cleaning Council, said: "These results, which I understand are the best for a decade, show that Britain has some of the cleanest beaches in Europe. With the holiday season approaching this is a great boost, and we hope that tourists will take the opportunity to enjoy Britain’s beaches with the confidence they deserve.” www.

report sharp increase in customer demand
An increase in orders boosted manufacturers in the cleaning industry for the second quarter of 2010, as the brightening economic picture provided good news for the sector. In the quarterly assessment released by manufacturing organisation the EEF, there were also predictions that the sector’s output will rise 3.5% in both 2010 and 2011, after contracting more than 10% in 2009.
The survey of 547 compa- nies saw 30% reporting ris- ing output with 38% report-
ing rising orders - the highest since records began 15 years ago. However, the manufac- turers questioned remain anxious about the depth of government support, a volatile global economy and the willingness of banks to provide credit.
Export sales figures also rose by a record high 23%, as companies cited support from a weaker pound, which helps to make goods more competitive in foreign mar- kets. The survey also revealed that so far the recovery in manufacturing is broad-

London FM apprenticeship scheme launched
A new facilities management apprenticeship programme is being launched in London and the South East. It is one of six FM apprenticeship projects being trialled across England as part of the new employer funded Virtual Academy for Business Services pilot, set up by the Sector Skills Council for FM, Asset Skills.
As the economy continues to recover there is widespread acknowledgement among employers of the ongoing need to raise skills in the workforce to retain a competitive advantage, particularly in an economic climate in which efficiency and effectiveness are paramount to success.
“This apprenticeship is a brand new training programme for the industry which we developed with FM employers,” said Karen Waterlow, FM specialist at Asset Skills. “We believe it will have a big impact on raising skills across the facilities management workforce and we want to hear from employers who are interested in getting involved.”
Apprenticeships have been identified by all political parties as an effective way of developing the highly skilled staff needed for long term economic prosperity.
