TSA Purchases L-3 ProVision™ Checkpoint Screening Systems


The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered approximately 200 ProVision advanced imaging technology systems from L-3 Communications for the screening of passengers at U.S. airport checkpoints. These systems provide TSA with an additional technology to support its layered security approach. The millimetre wave technology in the ProVision system


utilises radio waves to detect threats that may be hidden under a passenger’s clothing. A broad variety of concealed materials, including both metallic and non-metallic threat items, can be found with the ProVision machine. More than 500 ProVision units have now been ordered


globally. These systems are deployed worldwide at airports and other facilities, including federal and state courthouses, correctional institutions, embassies and border crossings.


IER Selected to Equip Middle East Airlines with Self-Service Check-In Solution


IER has been selected by Middle East Airlines to deploy its 918 Common Use Self-service platforms at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport. The kiosks are designed to meet the new challenges in passenger travel and take advantage of emerging trends such as e-ticketing, 2D bar-coded boarding passes, the ability to read e-passports and to check-in airline passengers with or without bags. TSA Procures Orator Plus


TSA has announced that it has awarded a sole source contract worth US$242,330, if all options are exercised, to Orator Plus, Inc. which has developed a multi-media presentation system that TSA intends to use to display panoramic photos and videos of buildings, transportation systems and venues it wants to secure. The presentation system, which is also known as Orator Plus, can fuse together images and video from


a variety of different sources Orator Plus can handle still photos and video captured on hardware that the company will supply


to TSA, as well as inputs from other sources, such as Google Earth or feeds from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). “This contract will address the requirements of [the] Transportation Security Network Management


(TSNM) I-View project to record panoramic still and video images of transportation systems and infrastructure,” said TSA in its contract award announcement. The fixed-price purchase order to Orator Plus has an initial amount of US$188,330 for the base period, plus an additional US$54,000 for four one-year options.

Airports Company South Africa Selects Safe Passage Training


Safe Passage International, Inc. announced that Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has purchased an upgrade to its existing Safe Passage training software and added additional courses to support its current security screening equipment. The upgraded software will provide ACSA with the latest features and functionality including the ability to manage X-ray image libraries, create and administer tests and training assignments, and remotely manage satellite training centres from a central location. The new Smiths HI-SCAN Operator Training Course will provide ACSA security officers with training on how to properly use the machine. In addition, security officers will be able to practice interpreting X-ray images using a simulation of the HI-SCAN machine using an extensive library of threat and innocent images.


Norway Renews Contract with Gemalto for Biometric ePassport


Gemalto has renewed its multi-year contract to personalise and issue ePassports for Norwegian citizens. Gemalto has deployed ePassports in Norway since 2005, placing the country as a pioneer in nationwide deployments of biometric passports compliant with international standards. "To date we have delivered several million


ePassports in the field, with high levels of satisfaction from both citizens and travel authorities," said Lars H. Boehler, Director of the National Police Computing and Material Service. "Gemalto is a reliable partner that we are happy to be working with for the coming years."


Elsag Datamat Provides the First Passive-Type Body Scanners in Italy


Venice’s Marco Polo Airport installed two Elsag Datamat body scanners at the end of March this year. One scanner is a


fixed-cabin type (that passengers must walk through and turn around), used for direct flights to the United States and other sensitive destinations, and a mobile unit which is placed according to needs next to security checkpoints. The devices were developed by the American company Brijot Imaging Systems. The scanners use Passive Millimetre Wave


(PMMW) technology. The term ’passive’ means that, in order to identify any hidden objects or substances, these systems do not emit energy against the person being controlled, but pick up the millimetric waves naturally given off by the body and measure the difference in heat related to the different output of energy of the person compared to that of objects. Since fabric is essentially neutral, it does not block the passage of millimetric waves through clothing: body scanners with PMMW technology are able to verify the presence of weapons or materials (for example, explosives, drugs, liquids, gels, etc.) hidden beneath clothing, activating a visual signal on the operator's monitor automatically and in real time. The equipment in use at Marco Polo has


no contraindications for passenger health because it does not emit any type of radiation or electromagnetic waves. Moreover, it guarantees passenger privacy: the image displayed on the operator's monitor shows only the profile of the person going through the checkpoint, without visualising any anatomic part.
