n POLISH people are currently represented by seven political parties elected to the nation’s two- house national assembly – the Sejm and the Senat. n The governing party, Civic Platform, known as PO (Platforma Obywatelska) is centre-right and led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. PO have 206 members in the Sejm and 56 in the Senat. n Its main rival, Law and Justice (PiS) is also Centre Right and is led by Jarosław Kaczyński, the twin brother of former President Lech Kaczyński, who was killed in the Smolensk tragedy. PiS currently has a total of 191 elected representatives across the Sejm and Senat. n Among the smaller parties with elected members in Poland’s national assembly are the centre-left Democratic Left Alliance (Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej – 41 members); The Polish People’s Party (Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe – centre, 31 members); Poland Plus (Polska Plus – centre right, 7 members); Social Democracy of Poland (Socjaldemokracja Polska – centre left, 4 members) and the Democratic Party (Stronnictwo Demokratyczne – centre, 73 members). n There are also around two dozen smaller parties including the Catholic-National Movement, the Greens, the National People’s Movement, the Women’s Party and the Reason Party. Following mixed fortunes in the 1990s, the Communist Party is no longer a major force in Polish politics.
