The fun side of
heritage
PoliSH-Scottish children can learn about their heritage in a fun and entertaining way in a series of summer schools being held next month. the Glasgow summer
school is run by Kasia Miaskowska, who has organised similar schools in edinburgh for the last three years. it will take place from Monday July 12 to Friday 16th from 10am to 2pm in Sikorski House (the Polish Social & educational Society), 5 Parkgrove terrace, Glasgow G3 7SD. an additional week may be provided from July 19-23 if there is sufficient demand. the school is open to
children aged from 5 to 10 who are interested in their Polish-Scottish heritage. the main theme will be
the history of Poland and Scotland, presented in an interesting way with games, singing, and dancing. it is expected that the cost
for the event will be around £40 per child for the week. Children will be expected to bring a packed lunch each day, as no catering facilities will be available. Similar schools will be run
in Cumbernauld (June 28 - July 2) and edinburgh (July 5 - 9). For enrolment details for
any of the schools, email Kasia at

n FORMER PE teacher Maciej Lewandowski was the winner of a blogging competition run by
edinburgh.pl to find the best blog by a Polish Scot. The panel included Polish writer Janusz Leon Wiśniewski. Another jury member, Małgorzata Sztuka, of the Federation of Poles in Great Britain said: “Maciej illustrates the reality in a short, sharp and intelligent way. He shows how the Poles cope in a multicultural society.” Here, Klaudia Jedrychowska speaks to him about his life and motivation.
MaCieJ leWanDoWSKi came to Dundee six years ago, finding work on a farm. Several other undemanding jobs followed, but he does not want to talk about them and quickly changes the subject saying his work is “unimportant”. He adds that he currently
works as a Master Cleaner and he says it is a very stress-free job which does not require the use of a brain. Maciej likes to use his brain. He writes about it on his blog while
contemplating the difference between Poland and Scotland. in Poland, said Maciej, he felt
intellectually satisfied but not financially rewarded. in Scotland he has the money, but complains about the lack of intellectual challenges. So, he challenges himself. He
reads Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mikhail Bulgakov and thomas Mann. He appreciates them for
their “beautiful, poetic presentation of the complexity of the human existence”. So it probably comes as no
surprise to learn that Maciej’s blog is reflective and thought- provoking, raising questions that demand answers. His writing is intelligent, facts
are presented in a gentle, thoughtful and clever way. What you won’t find in his blog
