Hampton’s having a birthday party.... and Visitors Can Help Celebrate Number 400 All Summer Long

P

art of the beauty of living in the Mid-Atlantic is proximity to four centuries of history beginning with the colonists’ arrival in 1610. This year,

Hampton, Va., is the matriarch turning 400. To celebrate, the city has a full slate of programs, exhibits and festivals exploring Hampton’s heritage.

The biggest bash takes place July 8-11. That’s when the big 4-0-0 will be feted in grandiose style. The festivities kick off Thursday night with the 11th annual Grand Pirates Ball. The same evening, “Hampton: From the Sea to the Stars,” a historical documentary featuring local historian John Quarstein, will have its premiere.

Other highlights of the weekend include the dedication of Hampton’s historical marker series, produced in partnership with Civil War Trails. There are 65 markers in all, each highlighting historical sites around the city. Also, Baltimore’s renowned Charm City Cakes will be presenting a 400th

Virginia Air & Space Center. The reception, free to the public, begins at noon.

Hampton’s 400th Anniversary Weekend features the Blackbeard Pirate Festival, promising fun at every turn. Blackbeard and more than 100 other authentically costumed pirate reenactors will be running rampant on the cobblestone streets of downtown Hampton. The free festival includes live music, fireworks, pirate- decorated tall ships and classic sea battles. The Little Swashbuckler Stage area is designed to entertain kids with puppet shows, musical acts and a treasure hunt. St. John’s Church, also celebrating its 400th

anniversary, will have special observances during the weekend.

Can’t make it down for the party? Don’t worry. Hampton is celebrating all summer long, as regular events beef up their menus in honor of the big anniversary.

Take note of the 43rd Annual Hampton Jazz Festival. It’s back at the Hampton Coliseum June 25-27. The weekend

of unforgettable entertainment features the top jazz, pop, R&B and blues performers in the nation. This year’s lineup includes Gladys Knight, Dave Koz and Keith Sweat.

The same weekend, the 20th annual Afrikan American

Festival features several new components in honor of four centuries of African American Hampton history. The highlight of this year’s cultural forum will be genealogy and family tree DNA seminars conducted by African Ancestry. There will also be more than 60 vendors selling African American art and artifacts. Evelyn “Champagne” King and other musicians will provide extra pop to the proceedings.

To round out the weekend, the Spirit of America Festival will be held in the Phoebus district. Celebrating 400 years of small town living at its best, the free event features music, food, children’s activities and a huge, Mustang-only car show.

Throughout the summer, Hampton hosts regular, weekly events including Saturday mornings at Market Place, a farmers market with special tastings, entertainment and family activities. There is also the Summer Street Fest series, featuring live music every Saturday evening.

For those who like to take in local attractions, Hampton has plenty of sightseeing options. The Virginia Air & Space Center and its Riverside 3D IMAX Theater shouldn’t be missed. The city’s new iPod Tour offers self-guided visits to the Air & Space Center as well as to downtown, Hampton University, Fort Monroe, Phoebus and Hampton’s historic neighborhoods. Plus, no visit to Hampton is complete without time spent on the water. Visitors can experience Hampton’s historic waterways aboard the Miss Hampton II harbor tour, departing from the downtown waterfront daily (except Mondays).
