Rabbi Raskas was a graduate of Washington University, St. Louis, MO, the Jewish Theological Seminary, NY, he was the Rabbi at the Temple of Aaron Synagogue, St. Paul for 38 years, appointed to the President's Commission on the Holocaust, and Professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College for 16 years. During his career he brought innovation, excitement, and interest to reli- gious services, creating new expressions for Jewish liturgy and synagogue life. A prolific writer he was the author of several books, as well as booklets about spirituality, and countless articles.He was known for his enthu- siasm, creativity, gift of scholarship and the love of the arts. Of Alexandria, Va. died peacefully May 24, 2010 at Goodwin House; she was 97. Born July 22, 1912 in New Bedford, Mass. to Elmer and Lenora Manley. Raised in Bristol, RI. Graduated Brown (Pembroke) University in 1932, majoring in French and Italian; attended graduate school at Brown, studying Education and English. Kit Stearns was a teacher at Cherry Lawn and Wyke- ham Rise in Conn. and the Professional Children’s School in New York City. She moved to theWashington area in 1942 and later taught for many years atWaynewood Elementary School, retiring in 1977. Kit was a charter member of Heritage Presbyterian Church and their first woman elder. She felt a strong commitment to the community and participated in the early days of Mond- loch House and United Community Min- istries. She volunteered at the Alexandria Jail, teaching reading. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church when she died. Kit moved to Goodwin House and was an active member of their community for 21 years. She had many friends and considered the Goodwin House staff her extended family. Preceded in death by brother, Robert M. Warner and sister, Mar- jory Manley. Survived and loved by chil- dren, Linden Spruill, Duncan Stearns, and Larry Spruill; nephew, R. Stephen Warner, niece, Karlette Warner. Great Aunt to John Boyland, Robbie Warner, Bonny Simi, Dove Heider. Survived by many other family and friends. Passed away onWednesday, June 9, 2010 with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Suzanne S. Slee; three sons, David L. Slee, Don H. Slee and his wife, Janet and Frank H. Slee; a daughter, Nancy Slee Novak and her husband, Jim; five grandsons, three sisters and one brother. Col. Slee was a highly decorated pilot during the Korean and VietnamWars. During his service his personal decorations included the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V,” the Air Medal (3 awards), including 24 Strike/FlightAwards, and the Meritorious Service Medal. A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2010 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA 22151. DON JAY SLEE


Formerly of University Park, MD, died this Memorial Day, May 31, 2010 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was the President of the University Park Women’s Club from 1998-2000 and was an active member of the congregation at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, MD, where she served on the sacristy and many projects. She was also involved in the PGLT community theater. In New Mexico she was a member of the Santa Fe Artists Market and was a key member of her congregation at Christ Lutheran Church. Darolyn spent the last 23 years of her life battling recurrent cancer. Her courage, strength and determination to live her life to the fullest (successfully!) have been an inspiration to her family, friends and all who knew her. Darolyn is survived through her children, Christi and Clayton Rogers, David and Joanne Thomas and Brian Thomas; her grandchildren, Jessica Conard, Loren Rogers, Lileigh Thomas and Sabrina Thomas. Services will be held in Santa Fe, NM on July 3. In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ Lutheran Church, 1701 Arroyo Chamiso, Santa Fe, NM 87505 in Darolyn's name are most appreciated.
