Sarah Borron of Arlington: What a gift your article was to me, as a former gifted student about to turn 30, with many memories of wonderful teachers who found ways to make being the odd one out seem like a good thing. When dividing the class into “reading groups,” my first-grade teacher, Miss Middleton, made me a reading group of one, as I could already read, and gave me one-on-one attention as well as the freedom to spend time in the library reading what I pleased. There were others, but she stands out. What a gift was a teacher who saw the emotional struggles of kids who seemed to have it easy because good grades came easily to them. Thank you for sharing the story of
your mother, her class, and you at that time. I can only imagine the journey you have taken from that time to now, and I wish you peace as you honor her memory.
