Gilbert E. Fields U.S. CAPITOL POLICE OFFICER


Gilbert E. Fields, 80, an Air


Force police officer who retired at the rank of chief master sergeant and then served with the U.S. Capitol Police for more than 20 years, died of respiratory failure June 3 at the Southern Maryland Hospital Center. He was a resi- dent of Clinton. Sgt. Fields served with the Cap-


itol Police from 1971 to 1990 and helped maintain the peace dur- ing Vietnam War protests. He also helped protect members of Congress after the 1983 bombing near the Senate chamber. Gilbert Ernest Fields, a native


of Clover, S.C., joined the Air Force in 1947. For seven years, he served with the police and securi- ty detachment responsible for guarding the president’s aircraft at Andrews Air Force Base and abroad. He served in Vietnam and re- ceived the Bronze Star Medal for directing his troops and retriev- ing extra ammunition under fire during the Tet Offensive. In his spare time, Sgt. Fields helped coach football for the Clinton Boys and Girls Club, lead- ing his teams to multiple league championships. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Carter Fields of Clin- ton; a son, Mark Fields of Great Falls; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. — T. Rees Shapiro


John F. Herrlein CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR


John F. Herrlein, 77, an Arling- ton County-based construction contractor who specialized in as- phalt driveways and parking lots, died May 14 at Virginia Hospital Center of complications from a stroke. He owned and operated Herr- lein asphalt company from 1982 until his death. John Francis Herrlein, a native


Washingtonian, was a 1951 grad- uate of Arlington’s Washington- Lee High School, where he played football. He attended Wake For- est University on a football schol- arship, playing offense and de- fense. He served in the Army for years as a member of the Old Guard at Fort Myer. After his service, he joined Newton Asphalt, where he worked for 23 years before start- ing his business. His memberships included the


Arlington Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Norma Joan “Joanne” Herrlein of Arlington; three chil- dren, John Herrlein of Manassas, Stephen Herrlein of Arlington and Cheri Federici of Fairfax County; a sister, Ann Victor of Lake Ridge; and five grandchil- dren.

Eileen K. Inglesby CHURCH MEMBER


Eileen K. Inglesby, 87, a mem- ber of St. John the Baptist Catho- lic Church in Silver Spring for more than 30 years, died of pneu- monia May 14 at her home in Sil- ver Spring. Mrs. Inglesby sang in the choir


at her church. According to her family, Mrs. Inglesby sang for Mother Teresa during one of her visits to Washington. Eileen Frances Kennedy, a na- tive of Philadelphia, was a 1944 English and Spanish graduate of what is now Immaculata Univer- sity in Chester County, Pa. She settled in the Washington area in the early 1960s and taught at Northwood High School in Sil- ver Spring from 1974 to 1982. Her husband of 55 years, Leo C.


Inglesby, died in 2005. Survivors include five children, Eileen Inglesby-Houghton and Leo C. Inglesby Jr., both of Silver Spring, Sally Schaefer of Waynes- ville, N.C., Thomas Inglesby of McLean and Mary Jane Hall, a circuit court judge in Norfolk; a sister; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. — T. secretarial work from 1971 to 1983 for the Air Transport Associ- ation, a trade group for major do- mestic airlines, died June 5 at her home in Montgomery Village. She had lung cancer. Mrs. Reiley settled in the


Washington area in the late 1960s and worked briefly at the World Bank as an administrative assis- tant. Marjorie Williams was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Haddon Heights, N.J. Constance Demaree, 87, an in-


structor in the English Depart- ment at the University of Mary- land from 1946 to 1992, died June 5 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda of complications from a stroke. She was a Chevy Chase resident.


She was born Constance Hart-


man in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and grew up in Washington, where she was a 1940 graduate of Roose- velt High School. She was a 1944 graduate of the University of Maryland, where she also re- ceived a master’s degree in Eng- lish in 1945 and completed all but her dissertation in the same ma- jor.


Her memberships included the


Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the Amer- ican Revolution, Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the American Association of University Profes- sors. Her husband, Kenneth D. De- maree, whom she married in 1948, died in 1995. Survivors include two daugh- ters, Carolyn Hill of Bel Air, Md., and Jean Roth of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Vera Hartman of Chevy Chase; and five grandchildren. — Adam Bernstein

Of Bennett Financial Advisors, Fairfax, VA, died June 9, 2010 at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, MD, after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Bennett was a financial planner for over 40 years, receiving awards for outstanding service to clients, industry and associates. He was a Life Underwriting Fellow and one of the first financial planners to receive the Chartered Financial Consultant designation. He served as past president of the Maryland Life Underwriter's Association.


A graduate of Lehigh and Colorado State Uni- versities, Jerry was the author of several books and numerous journal articles. He trademarked the Retirement Coach, a process for assisting clients with their lifetime retirement planning. He has been featured on CNBC's Money Club and WRC's Talk Radio "Your Money".

Mr. Bennett grew up in Camp Hill, PA, the son of the late Edward C. and Lorraine G. Bennett. His hobbies included playing piano, avid reading, and he enjoyed lifelong loves of jazz music, golfing, swimming and gardening. He was a big fan of the Washington Redskins and Maryland College basketball. At the time of his death, he was writing a personal history of his fight with cancer.


Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Laura J. Bennett; daughters, Julie Bennett of Olympia, WA and Dana Wozny and her husband, Eugene of Fairfax, VA: sister, Nanci Wilkinson and her husband, Richard of Bethesda, MD; four grandchildren, other relatives and friends. His daughter, Lori Bennett preceded him in death.


A Celebration of Jerry's life will be held at The Community Church of Ocean Pines, 11227 Racetrack Rd., Berlin, MD 21811, on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 1 p.m.

Of Fuquay-Varina, NC and formerly of Rockville,MD died peacefully at his home in North Carolina on June 11, 2010. Ward was born to Lewis Holladay Burgess and Rosemary Quinn Burgess on December 5, 1921 in Omaha, NE. He spent his childhood in New Rochelle, NY and Louisville, KY before attending Vanderbilt U,TN prior to WWII. He enlisted and served in Naval Communications during WWII in the mediteranean in Italy/Africa; the pacific and following the war in Tokyo, Japan. After the war he attended Loyal College of Baltimore,MD and was Captain of the Golf Team. He then served as Assistant Golf Professional at Clifton Park Club, Baltimore, MD before accepting a position at Chevy Chase Club where he was named Head Golf Professional in 1949. He was named Mid-Atlantic Golf Professional of the Year in 1961 and served in the Mid-Atlantic Golf Professional Association Executive Committee in his later years, finally retiring from Chevy Chase Club in 1987. He was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Professional Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1989. Survivors include: wife, Emma Burgess of Fuquay-Varina, NC; son, Ward M.
