I removed all the masking from the fairing to make sure everything looked good against the black background. The eagle wasn’t too dark, so I went ahead and used the same red brown mixtures from the big eagle to air- brush in the little eagle. I used a paintbrush with Sepia and a little 4220 Deep Black to lay in the very tips of the left wing feathers for maximum contrast against the large eagle’s wing.
With the same colors as the beak, I airbrushed in the feet. On a palette, I mixed Deep Black with a couple drops of Medium Gray and painted the base of the talons with a brush, heat setting when done. I then used a mixture of Medium Gray and Brite White to airbrush on the talon highlights. When I felt the piece was finished, I signed and dated under the left wing with a paintbrush and Medium Gray. Under the right wing, I credited the original artist of
the wing scenery with “based on art by Rick Kelley”. After a last allover blast with the hairdryer and a final cleaning of the unpainted areas, the fairing was ready to go to the guys at Crestview Auto body for clear coating. With both paintbrush and airbrush, I added contrast and definition where needed using Sepia with a couple drops of Deep Black and Reducer.
Here is the finished piece, buffed and back from clearcoating, ready for deliv- ery to the customer!
