Reasons to be cheerful

Share prices have been on the up in recent weeks, with strong performances from Liberty Global, MTG and Virgin Media.

Stock market confidence in the com- pany has risen on the back of recent announcements, including acquiring an addi- tional 35% in Viastrong, and therefore taking control of the company that operates the Viasat Ukraine DTH platform. MTG later announced that its pay-TV unit Viasat had agreed a carriage deal for its channels on the IPTV service operated by Norwegian telco Telenor, seeing shares hit a high of SEK419. Virgin Media’s shares hit a high of £17.20
Liberty Global had reason to cheer
(€18.90) on the day it announced a trial that will see it deliver 50Mbps broadband via over- head telegraph poles. Shares had earlier risen from an opening price of £15.61 to £16.37 after the UK cable operator said it would launch a 100Mbps service by the end of the year. German pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland
hasn’t had an easy ride since it rebranded from Premiere. This year has seen its share price fall to a low of €1.75. However, news that it had acquired logistics company Loxxess Medienlogistik and plans to broadcast a Bundelsiga football match in 3D in March may have helped push shares back over the €2 mark, hitting €2.05 on March 10. RTL also saw its share price rise despite announcing revenue and profit declines for 2009. Shares were up €0.22 to €24.44 on the day the German broadcaster reported overall revenue of €5.4bn was down 6% year-on-year and EBITA profit slumped 17.6% to €755m. ●
