The pitch was extremely heavy but in amazing condition considering the amount of daily rain fall, a testament to the hard working ground staff. Being able to lift a polo stick at all was a challenge in the heat, never mind that our hitting had to be precise, none of this Cambiaso dribbling, not that we could do that anyway!

The big event was quickly upon us. VIP’s (Mr S Iswaran, the Senior Minister of State for Trade and Finance, threw in the fi rst ball); sponsors, paying guests, fashion shows, competitions for the best hat, team presentations, TV, photographers, didn’t help to steady the nerves.

Our team gathered on the sideline for a team talk, Kellie (our team captain) stipulating that we were to take no prisoners and that losing was not an option. With this in mind we immediately conceded two goals, not the start we were hoping for, with the Singaporean team playing on their home ground and supported by their strong 2 goaler Sherri Lyn Hensman. The pressure was on; we had to raise the bar; we couldn’t let them win. Changing horses in the second Chukka and with a kick in the rear from our supporters (Kirsty’s parents had made the trip from Perth, Becks’s sister, father and niece were coincidentally travelling through Singapore and an old Ham friend, Henrietta Gourlay), we went out and scored again and again. In the fi nal chukka we hung onto our lead with Becks and Caroline both scoring a goal a piece, helped by Kellie and Kirsty who were on fi re. As the fi nal whistle blew the fi nal score was 5-3 to England. Come on England!!!

We made our way back to the pony lines on cloud nine, Singapore had played a tough game and we were lucky to hold onto the lead in the fi nal chukka. We couldn’t believe it, we’d won. As we stood on the podium in true Formula 1 style, huge bottles of Laurent Perrier Champagne were spayed across us and we were presented with our prizes. Kirsty was rightly singled out and awarded ‘Most Valuable Player.’

As you can imagine the party that ensued was incredible, Becks and Kellie had to make a mad dash to the airport for the return fl ight to the UK, but in true sporting style Caroline and Kirsty partied into the wee small hours, both being thrown into the pool; something which the fellow passengers on BA018 wished had happened to Becks before she boarded the

fl ight back to the UK, still dressed in her team shirt and dirty champagne covered whites.

Euphoric and over excited as we were, after competing and winning on behalf of HPC in an International Ladies Tournament, it was time to thank our host, Singapore Polo Club, and the sponsors, Shanghai Tang for the prizes, Pan Pacifi c Hotels who kindly put us up in their 5 star hotel and Laurent Perrier for the celebratory fi zz. We, the Ham Polo Club All Conquering Ladies Team, were even proudly featured on

Good Morning Singapore, the daily breakfast news programme.

Also many thanks to Singapore Polo Club and its members (including Charlotte Marson, Lynly Fong, Anna Lowndes, Henrietta Gourlay, Sunny Oh, Torrey Dorsey, Sattar Khan, Satinder Garcha) for their warm hospitality and enormous generosity.

We had, quite simply, the trip of a lifetime!
