quick goals by George McCorkell and great supporting play by Josh Nimmo. Another two goals by Nimmo and a tap in penalty saw us go into the 2nd Chukka 5-1 up on the scoreboard.

The match was a heavily contested affair with bullish defence by the Americans who started their resurgence in the second chukka with some clever play by Dan Keating, who we were struggling to control in the midfi eld. England went into half time with a considerable 6 goal advantage, despite the tenacious USA team biting at our heels. The next two chukkas, with our horses tiring considerably in the Newport heat, were furiously contested. England, however, were just a little better organized in attack than USA and with solid defence by Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers, England held on to a score 12-5 victory.

We, yet again, were called upon to “play the fool” as the aftermath of the game required hoards of autographs to be signed and photographs to be taken with the Newport crowd. As much as this was a novelty for us, it seemed appropriate at the time to make it seem otherwise! After the prize giving and wonderful supper provided for us by the club, it was then deemed appropriate to at last hit Newport’s nightlife scene. As well as Saturday morning went, it became evident as the night passed, that Sunday morning might be a little hazier!

Sunday

A late wake up to another stunningly hot Newport day put a real dampening on the trip as the thought of returning to New York entered our minds. This was stamped out almost immediately as we must go to town for a full English breakfast and a brief on the day’s activities. It seemed that there was a chance for one last hurrah; a sailing trip round the island. We strolled down to the harbour and had the most fantastic afternoon’s sailing watching some of Newport’s fi nest private yachts and cruise ships potter into the harbour.

Despite Josh Nimmo’s wayward driving we arrived back in New York that evening only to hope that there would be some possibility of being invited again!

we did our best to pretend that

the only way

we travel

to our games

‘back home’ was air-borne
