POLO CHARITY CUP

by Dara Williams

TWO of the best-known players on the planet – Argentina’s 10-goal Adolfo Cambiaso and US superstar Nick Roldan – took part in the third edition of the annual Jaeger-LeCoultre Polo Charity Cup, held at Ham on 12 June.

They were joined by Cambiaso’s great friend and brother-in-law, Bartolomé Castagnola and Dubai’s talented young Rashid Albwardy, son of former Ham president, Ali Albwardy. However, the men’s match ended with a narrow score, 3-2, and the real excitement of the afternoon was to be found in an all-ladies’ match.

For the white shirts Clare Milford Haven had recruited Alice Gipps, Sarah Wiseman and past British Open winner Nina Clarkin. They faced Clare Mathias, Aurora Eastwood, Lia Salvo and Rosie Ross in purple colours.

Nina Clarkin opened the scoring and gave her side a 3-0 lead in the fi rst chukka. Purples opened their account in the second, with Lia Salvo – a Jaeger-LeCoultre worldwide polo ambassador – sending the ball between the posts; but they were never really to outclass the opposition.

Indeed, on the last bell, Whites rode out victorious, 7-3, to received prizes from Ham chairman Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers; British brand manager for Jaeger-LeCoultre Guillain Maspetiol, and his French opposite number, Patrick Boutellier.

Prince Beatrice of York, Jasmin and Amber Le Bon, football manager Fabio Capello and Ham’s polo ambassador for Pakistan, Mohammed Asif Hafi z and his wife, Shaina, were among three hundred guests attending the event, during the course of which an auction raised the magnifi cent sum of £55,000. Lots included a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Lady, and a polo pony to be chosen from Cambiaso’s Argentine estancia.

Charities to benefi t were Ideas del Sur, with which Cambiaso is connected closely, and which works for disabled and underprivileged Argentine youngsters; and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, which offers a unique programme of support and information on cancers and treatment.
