HRH CHARITY DAY

It seems that fate, providence or the universe sometimes destine like-minded folks to meet, even if oceans and time zones have separated them prior to their fi rst chancing upon one another. This is the story of such an auspicious meeting that led to a stellar event benefi tting several great causes in the presence of England’s fi nest.
Texan entrepreneur and polo patron Alan Meeker took his Crestview Farm team to play in Dubai in December of 2008. Organising the play at the Desert Palm on the Emirati side were Ham’s own Peter McCormack and his associates. To make a long story short, Alan and his entourage
and Peter and the Dubai group became fast friends. Peter assessed that Alan was worthy of an introduction to the estimable London Polo Club, and Alan immediately responded to this generous gesture by accepting an offer to host a charity event at Ham on behalf of Crestview Farm. As neither Texans nor Brits are known for doing things half way, plans were put in motion for an event of regal proportions.
The crowd gathered at Ham on an overcast, rain-free Saturday in early June; the camaraderie was as warm and genuine as the weather was cool and bracing. The day’s activities began with a lively cocktail

reception, the positive atmosphere of which portended good things for the ensuing hours. The sight of wry-visaged Texans and laid-back Southerners mixing with the bemused, but genuinely welcoming denizens of the British Isles along with a smattering of representatives from the four corners of the globe was truly a sight to behold. I think all in attendance would agree that
the mix worked – the cocktail of guests as compelling as the refreshing libations emanating apace from the bar at the venerable Ham club. And the club itself provided
