K. Lu from Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, published a paper in Science to “The Future of Metals”. The Boeing

787 Dreamliner is mostly made from carbon fiber- reinforced polymeric composites (50% by weight, up from 12% in the Boeing 777). Aluminum usage has dropped to 20% (versus 50% in the 777). Lu discusses the reasons behind the trend that the share of metals in engineering materials has been diminishing, and which applications are likely to stay in the domain of metals. © Science
