Router helps support the oil industry Wireless network

L

ufkin Automation has specified the Westermo MRD- 310 3G router to equip its SAM

Well Manager product, a solution for monitoring and control of rod-pumping wells. Used in a series of pilot projects mainly for the European and Asian markets, the router provides a high level of connectivity and supports several mobile standards includ- ing GSM, GPRS, 3G UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA. Oil fields are often situated in

remote and demanding environ- ments where extreme variations in temperature, moisture and other environmental variables are an issue. Installation of the control and monitoring systems here can be difficult as there are often

hundreds of pumps spread over large geographic areas. Said to be the oil industry’s

most advanced technological solu- tion for high-precision monitoring and control of rod-pumping wells, the SAM Well Manager allows the operator to optimise pump perfor- mance and reliability. Connected to the pump’s SCADA system, flow can be analysed and service and maintenance requirements calculated before the event of mechanical failure and energy consumption is optimised. It can be configured to stop the pumping process at low oil levels and when maintenance or service is required. The system also creates a complete action history that can be used for further optimisation.

The MRD-310 supports the

wide variety of mobile standards used globally and IPSec encrypted VPN tunnels – a requirement for safety critical applications that use unsecure public networks (Internet). Furthermore, the MRD- 310 provides a serial interface and serial to IP conversion, which is necessary to connect to the controller. The routers have been developed for harsh environments and can operate in temperatures from -20˚C to +60˚C. Using High Speed Uplink

Packet Access (HSUPA), the uplink capacity is 2Mbit/s, together with the 7.2 Mbit/s down- link data, making the unit suitable for even high data rate applica- tions. MRD-310 provides built-in two port 10/100 Ethernet switches and an RS-232 and thus easily allows devices to seam- lessly connect over a consider- able geographical area. To extend the life of legacy equipment there are a number of tools included in the router that will ensure connectivity with PLCs and other RS-232-based devices. The unit supports both packet and circuit switched mode, Serial to IP con- version, Modbus Gateway, DNP3 Level 1 Outstation and Dial-Up modem emulation.

streamlines picking

lectronics manufacturer Elko has installed an industrial wireless network from

Radiolinx in its warehouse to streamline picking operations. Around 20 powerful routers hang from the ceiling beams in the production hall and transmit the

signals regardless of obstacles. A computer calculates which

goods are to be selected, when and how, and messages are sent contin- uously to wireless computers held by workers, enabling them to pick three times more goods. Downtime has also been eliminated. Running since the start of 2007,

the solution features 10-15 wireless RLXIB-IHW radios from Prosoft Technology. Used for PDA stock removal, machinery inspec- tions and general network access, it offers WPA2-128bit AES encryp- tion with usually one master and the remainder repeaters, in addi- tion to self-healing technology.
