Stud provides a fast and secure anchor post

New from Profil is the SZB stud, designed to provide a fast and secure anchor post for plastic or metal clips used to secure trim, insulation, hydraulic pipework or electrical wiring runs to sheet metal components. These studs have an asymmetric buttress (Christmas tree) style

thread that provides simple push-on, screw-off location for the secondary fasteners. They feature an industry-standard 5mm core diameter and installed height of 15mm, and can be inserted auto- matically in pressed components as part of their production process at rates of more than 100 fasteners per minute. The studs can also be installed in low volume and prototyping applications using a simple C frame press. Capable of self piercing up to 1.5mm DC03 / DC04 grade steel, they can be mounted in pre-pierced

materials up to 3.0mm thick and are suitable for use with coated or uncoated materials, including high tensile, stainless and sandwich steels, aluminium sections and magnesium castings. They also provide assured clip orientation and location, as well as an absolute positional accuracy of +0.2mm. Of additional benefit, the studs provide vibration and watertight fixings. Applications range from the automotive industry to electrical equipment and domestic appliances.

Bearings suit Mercedez-Benz Maybach

When building the centre console lid of the prestigious Mercedez Benz Maybach, Daimler Chrysler needed a component solution that would meet the requirements of compactness and quality. To meet the requirements, the

Guide modules have been added to MISUMI Europa’s linear technology range. The MA series presents a guide

cylinder for lifting gears based design and is available either with cylinders or purely as a mechani- cal unit. The cylinder modules are equipped with limit switches. These are suitable for simple

transfer and transport tasks, and can carry both small light parts or large heavy ones. The MAH and MAT modules

are available in horizontal and vertical versions. The cylinder stroke of the MAH types is 100–300mm, 150–350mm or 200–400mm, depending on the cylinder diameter, and 25–50mm for the MAT types.

company selected Spyraflo self- clinching/self-aligning Delrin bearings. These FSD- 2M 2mm bearings are

securely

installed into the sheet metal frame that forms the console latch. These met the

application requirements by taking up little space, while the self-aligning capability ensures the mechanism works flaw- lessly, explains the company. At the Maybach manufacturing

facility in Germany, 300 highly skilled craftsmen produce around five of the vehicles each day. The bearings are distributed in the UK and Eire by Micromech.

Sealing improved on quarter turn lock

An upgrade has improved the sealing of EMKA’s 1000 series of quarter turn locks. This new IP66 option means panel builders can now achieve a higher sealing specification for completed cabinets. The upgrade has been achieved through the use of

additional O rings and a door mounting seal, which also ensures ease of operation. According to the company, this can be used either as

a retrofit installation or in production by those who may use the standard IP65 lock type for general use and then specify the IP66 kit for harsher environments.

MECHANICAL COMPONENTS SUPPLEMENT – MARCH 2010 Design Solutions

Counterbalance

range of hinges

Consistent high-torque performance in a compact package is provided by Southco’s ST-12C Counterbalance Hinges. These offer multiple options for counterbalancing torque, plus the ability to imbed the images within product housings. In addition, the counterbal- ance design requires less effort to move heavier objects when compared to friction-only hinges. Providing ease of movement and

no-slip positioning, applications include movable components in consumer, medical, transport and industrial machinery applications.

Slewing ring bearings

Due to improved manufacturing methods and design concepts, slewing ring bearings are no longer limited to large heavy duty applications. For example, R.A.Rodriguez’s KAYDON range now starts at just 38mm bore diameter and only 6.5mm thick. These bearings are normally

supplied pre-lubricated, are sealed, and can be specified with integral gear of just plain. They come as standard with mounting holes, ready to be bolted directly to the assembly. Two series are available from

the company. The first is the standard industrial class MTO bearing range with bores ranging from 50mm to 324mm and with through or tapped holes. Greater accuracy and a smaller design space is provided by the KAYDON Reali-Slim turntable bearings. These are now available in sizes from 38mm to 152.4mm and are 6.35mm high. As with the standard range,

options are available for the KAYDON Reali-Slim turntable bearings including internal or external gear or plain diameters, reduced clearance or pre-load and various hole types.
