Feature Gears

Industrial gear units are used in a wide range of applications. Here, we take a look at a few of the latest introductions to the UK market

ndustrial gear units are available in a variety of designs and can be used in a diverse range of applications. Take, for example, the Dynabox

range of right-angled servo gearheads from French company Girard Transmissions. Available in the UK from Motor Technology, the Dynabox 25 range can be used in a wide variety of applications – ranging from film camera manipulators, rotary tables and tool carousels, to camshaft machining centres and large handling systems. These maintenance-free units have

a centre-to-centre distance of 25mm, ratios of up to 60:1 and are available with a keyed hollow-shaft output. Furthermore, they can operate continu- ously at speeds up to 4000rpm and 6000rpm intermittently. They are also self locking from 30:1 ratio and are rated at up to 29Nm peak and 17Nm continuous. Three levels of backlash can be selected from one to ten arc minutes. Of additional benefit, they offer high axial and radial loading capability and are available with a range of motor flanges and backlash- free couplings. According to the company,

due to its gear cutting process, there is nearly 90% surface contact between the gear and the tooth, resulting in high wear resistance and low backlash. Wittenstein, meanwhile,

has launched the SUMO range of alpha right-angle hypoids. Described as powerful, the new prod- ucts are said to guarantee the highest possible productivity for machines. The new range is derived from

modern hypoid technology in combination with planetary gears with helical gearing, resulting in products that offer maximised performance. Also available from the company is

the SPK+, a compact precision bevel gear with output shaft and high effi- ciency for ultimate transmission of high torques; the TPK+ compact precision bevel gear with output flange and high efficiency, also for high torques; and the TPK+ high torque range which is said to be the power packet for highest positioning accuracy, combining high torques and torsional rigidity with the compactness of a bevel gear. A hypoid style gearbox is also

available from HMK Automation & Drives. The Neugart WPLN right angle performance gearbox series has been designed to be quiet in operation, while offering high output torque and a compact space envelope. With the older WPLS series, spiral

bevel gears with a 1:1 ratio were used together with a planetary stage. By replacing these with hypoid gears – with or without a planetary stage – for ratios less than 10:1, the hypoid stage only is required, resulting in this smaller, lighter and more cost effective solution. The output torque has also been significantly increased. With these, the output shaft can be

supplied smooth, fitted with a key or splined according to DIN 5480.

Assemblies

Complete modular sub-assemblies are now supplied as part of NORD’s NORDBLOC range of industrial gear units for torque output from 60,000 to 200,000Nm. These comprise

the UNICASE gear- box, motor and base frame with options of elastic or fluid coupling,

drum or disc brake,

radial or axial fan, auxiliary drive, torque support with attachment plate, protec- tive covers and sealing system options. There is also a choice of temperature

options including fans, external oil/air or oil/water cooling. Measuring devices and

sensor options can be provided for oil inspection, temperature and bearing condition monitoring. The modular design covers six

basic installation configurations with identical installation dimensions for all two- and three-stage gear ratios, allowing an almost endless combination of power transmission sub-assembly options with fast delivery assured from standard off the shelf components. The symmetrical UNICASE gearbox design permits mirror image installation for dual drive applications. NORD’s own wide range of IEC frame energy saving three-phase motors are used through- out, and NORD SK 700E frequency inverters are available to offer complete gear unit and drive solutions with high performance motor control, and connection to all current factory networking communications systems. There are four frame sizes available,

with helical and bevel-helical gear stage designs, plus a range of options for mechanical interfacing, performance, safety and environmental conditions.

received a call from Northern Foods when the on-site maintenance team identified a potential problem on a gearbox. One hour later and the ERIKS repair depot in Chesterfield had collected the gearbox, which turned out to be a sealed enclosure to prevent ingress during washdown, with a bevel/helical gear reducer and an AC 3 phase motor inside. During inspection, the company found that water ingress had caused internal fretting corrosion of the main output

shaft-bearing unit. Although this would have posed no threat of contamination, prolonged operation would have resulted in raised temperature and eventually seizure of the unit. So, the gearbox was stripped, cleaned, inspected and repaired,

including a bearing change, with a re-bore and a bush applied to the bearing housing. The gears were also inspected and passed. The motor stator was placed in the stoving oven, usually used to cure re-wound electric motor stators, to ensure no moisture was left, and the supply leads were repaired. New seals were applied and the unit lubed and re-assembled. The unit was back at Gunstones by 8pm.
