Gold

Our boxers gave us much to cheer
this Twenty-ninth Olympic Year
and Physics suddenly was ‘cool’
inspiring Beijing’s swimming pool;
so we continue in that tone
to honour four stars of our own:

The first, no stranger to these parts
began in Medicine and Arts;
As Senator, she raised a storm
‘round women’s health and jail reform;
no canvas needed to select
her worthy of the term ‘elect’.

The second strove to complement
History with Union President;
Her voice well known to one and all,
our ‘Morning Ireland’ wake-up call
and shaper of the nation’s views.
This evening she is headline news.

The third might speculate that Law
was preparation for the yaw
and pitch of market’s trading floor.
With Education at its core
his Midas touch has reached the sky.
Sing: “River deep, mountain high.”

The fourth read history, became
an author and a household name,
from early days of ‘The Old Boys’
maintained his literary poise;
In Ritz and Ballroom of Romance
we know the dancer from the dance.

When this quartet’s accomplishments
become Olympiad events
our medal tally will increase
and Ireland be as Ancient Greece;
till then, your doubting arms unfold:
Applaud these takers of the Gold!
