Harnessing Wind Energy in Ireland
The rollout of the Spirit of Ireland project, a new breakthrough in national energy, has been made possible thanks to research by Professor of Applied Physics Igor Shvets, Principal Investigator at TCD’s Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN).
Professor Igor Shvets has identifi ed suitable locations on the west coast of Ireland which would support Hydro Storage Reservoirs facilitating the safe and economical harnessing of wind energy. The harvested energy can be instantly released as natural energy and is ideal for both domestic use and export. The project would secure Ireland’s energy supplies and save up to €30 billion over 10 years on fossil fuel imports.

New Arts Technology Research Laboratory (ARTL)

A cutting-edge arts and technology research facility was opened by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen T.D. in April 2009.
The facility, developed by the School of Drama, Film and Music and funded through the support of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Facilities Enhancement Scheme 2008, brings together fi lm, video, music, sound production, theatre, dance, live art, and installation in a state-of-the art digital environment for the purpose of interdisciplinary postgraduate research.

IFTA Award for Trinity Historian
The two-part television documentary series on Oliver Cromwell by Trinity historian Dr Micheál Ó Siochrú M.A., Ph.D. (1989) won the Best Single Documentary category at the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) award ceremony in February 2009. The documentary was based on Dr O’Siochru book – God’s Executioner: Oliver Cromwell and the Conquest of Ireland, published on the 350th anniversary of Cromwell’s death.
TBA School Leadership Programme
The Trinity Business Alumni, in association with Trinity Access Programmes (TAP) held the annual School Leadership Programme in Science Gallery earlier this year.
The programme is a part of a range of outreach activities which aim to increase the entry and participation rates at third level institutions of under represented socioeconomic groups. The 40 children who took part, representing 10 schools in Dublin Central, North, South and West, had been identifi ed by their teachers as at risk of not completing their Leaving Certifi cate.
