POOL AND SNOOKER
TV and snooker have been good for each other. The sport is one of the easier to televise and with the colour contrasts and the disparate personalities
involved it has attracted an audience which spreads across all demographic groups. A match keeps an audience for a long time and indeed snooker fills the
schedule very nicely. That heavy exposure has brought the sport to many and nothing beats TV coverage for prompting the “I fancy a go at that” mentality.
Off the back of TV coverage comes sponsorship and the heavy hitters have major players associated with them. Certainly the younger end of the market are
heavily driven by the brands the stars use.
The problem faced by snooker in particular and pool to a lesser extent is, of course, space. Most homes simply cannot accommodate a table. At the same
time, the increasing trend towards entertainment in the home is driving fans to have that table. Apparently, builders of extensions and manufacturers of
conservatories and so-called garden rooms have been doing good business supplying this market. Perhaps retailers should be in contact with local specialists
in those areas.
Peradon
Founded in 1885 Peradon are the world's longest established
cue manufacturing company, and were first to introduce the
hand spliced cue. Peradon cues have been used by the
game's greatest players including the legendary, Joe Davis.
Today the company is based in Liverpool and is one of only
a few companies manufacturing cues in the U.K. Through
their appointed stockists the company offers a superb
selection of beautifully crafted cues for both snooker and
eight ball pool.
Peradon cater for all players with their budget range of
Cannon branded cues for the price conscious player and
their own English made ranges of Peradon cues for the more
serious players. Rigorous timber selection is of the utmost
importance in the manufacture of quality cues: only timber
with the correct grain structure and strength is used to create
a Peradon cue. When it comes to timber selection Peradon
have a distinct advantage as they process more ash than any
other English cue maker.
Although many of the cue styles crafted by Peradon have
remained unchanged for over one hundred years the company has also been working on innovations. The Laser cue has the appearance of a normal
hand spliced cue however a revolutionary new composite material, Ebonex, is spliced to the butt rather than the traditional Ebony. Ebonex has a very
consistent density and excellent 'feel' giving the cue improved playing characteristics. With good feedback from players the company sees Ebonex as a
superb and green alternative to the traditional Ebony butt.
Working closely with the inventor, Neil Johnson, Peradon are shortly to launch a new style of cue, the Gravity cue. This is considered to be a big leap
forward in snooker cue technology and to date it has won 6 awards for innovation having been tested and scientifically verified by John Moores
University Engineering Department. The cue's unique keeled weighting system creates a 'hull like' heavy bottom along the base of the butt providing
stability and discouraging wrist rotation and lateral movement of the arm, resulting in straighter, smoother, more powerful action and greater harmony
between player and cue. Initial results have been extremely positive and Peradon are predicting a high demand for this new cue technology.
