Why Cyprus?
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. The Cypriot economy is
prosperous and has diversified in recent years. According to the latest IMF
estimates, its per capita GDP is at $28,381, just above the average of the
European Union. Cyprus has been sought as a base for several offshore
businesses for its highly developed infrastructure and the Cypriot government
recently adopted the Euro on 1 January 2008.
Historical facts
Water wells discovered by archaeologists in western Cyprus are believed to be
among the oldest in the world, dated at 9,000 to 10,500 years old.The remarkably
well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
dating to approximately 6800 BC. Remains of an 8-month-old cat were
discovered; the grave is estimated to be 9,500 years old, predating ancient
Egyptian civilization.
Local cuisine
Seafood and fish dishes of Cyprus include local squid, octopus, red mullet, and
sea bass. Cucumber and tomato are used widely in salads along with a fresh olive
oil and parsley preparation, all ripened by the sun.
