BANG THE DRUM
Welcome to
S
ummer’s here! Usually a happy time for barbecues and beaches but many people in the
property sector aren’t feeling too jolly. Hopefully this summer issue of PROPERTYdrum
will provide some positive thoughts, useful info and maybe even some inspiration, there’s
always some good news somewhere!
Our major feature on Portals may get you thinking, there’s a great deal of change going on up
there in webworld so Andrea Kirkby has been investigating whether to click, subscribe or take
the free option. Certain parts of the country seem to be more stable than others and Edinburgh,
the stunning focus of our Pulse feature this issue, is a prime example. Lisa Crosby enjoys a taste
of summer in the city, with its broad spread of property, which was voted top place to live in
2007 by Location, Location, Location. Meanwhile other countries are quietly gearing up for a
sunny future. Dani Simpson dipped her toes in the blue waters of Cape Verde, a certain hotspot
for future international investors, unspoilt, relatively inexpensive and totally gorgeous – have a
look! Even in good years the quieter summer period is a time for assessment, planning and
implementing change. We are told that change is good so maybe its time to look at new avenues:
we have a feature on page 66 titled
Yes it is a difficult market, but as
‘Who’s up for auction?’ in which David
Sandeman looks at ways to enter this
a lot of the content in this issue

shows, there are opportunities.’
marketing should be high on the
agenda – we meet the people at INEA
who say that their Multi Listing System
is the future – network and succeed is their message. Or maybe franchising is a thought –
Winkworth report that they are expanding in this recession as small established agencies join
them and some who have lost their jobs start up a new franchise. Adding lettings to your
services is an option – but you need to understand the legalities. Yes, it is a difficult market, but
as a lot of the content in this issue shows, there are opportunities. We have plenty of experts’
advice in our letting section. As for commercial property, we report on a wave of tenant power
that’s breaking out as retailers persuade giants like Westfield to listen to their needs.
If you have some inspiring news or tips for getting through the recession, let us know.
Deadline for our September issue is 31 July, but I’d be delighted to talk to you anytime. There’s
plenty more inside and on our website:
