ISHARES CUP Words by Mark Orr
The 2009 iShares
Cup – first stop
Venice
The 2009 iShares Cup looks to be a competitive as the end of the 2008 season. Many
familiar faces are back but also some new teams. Highly experienced multihulls sailors
have flocked to the event bringing with then sponsors who are adding momentum to
this great event.
ignificantly this circuit
S
is a beneficiary of the
death of the ORMA 60
circuit with Groupama
and Gitana both entering this
whilst their ORMA 60s sit in their
team bases. New boys this year
are Ecover who are no longer to
sponsor Mike Golding’s Open 60
but will run to this circuit instead;
also new are two boats from
Oman Sail one helmed by new
recruit Loick Peyron; Luna with
Erik Maris at the helm
Organisers OC Events, one of
Ellen Macarthur’s companies have
arranged a superb circuit with their
fist stop in Venice showing just
how grown up this circuit has now
become. Each event tries to bring
the racing as close to the public as
possible and to make it as close
and dramatic as it is safe to do.
Consequently racing is over short
legs and no longer than 30 minutes.
Each event will have up to 20 races.
There will also be corporate races

to enable sponsors to get very close
to the action as well as a non-
participating fifth man for each race.
