‘Created to perform’ reads the vinyl
down the ‘SYZ & Co Hydrofoil’ hull and
certainly the catamaran is capable of
flight, as captured in the footage of the
early flights in March. As to whether
it will be competitive in all conditions
under the handicap of the additional
weight of its ‘wing’s’ and their hydraulic
ram systems and so be able to achieve
high performance in Archimeadean
mode (conventional sailing mode), is yet
to be seen.
There are so many variables of ram
angle and foil incline still to explore.
What is evident at present is that when
the engineering break-through is made,
the impact on sailing as we know it,
could be phenomenal. ‘We think the
future’s flying’ concludes Alex Schneiter.
