to the boat’s speed. For some reason
we don’t have lift off. The Foiler hangs
on the brink of flight, where the wave
piercing bows, reminiscent of the ‘A’
cat, nose up encouragingly. We pluck
off 150kg- two of the 4 crew and the
optimism of today being a flying day,
returns to no avail.
A meter and a half taller than the other
lake racing cat, the M2, the Foiler has
a square top main with 6 full length
battens and 2 additional leech battens.
The Sebastien Schmitt designed M2 is
an extremely popular and successful
one-design class of almost 26
competitors and there are other design
similarities other than the mast section,
that have rolled over from the M2 to the
Foiler. A shared DNA is evident in the
space frame whose spine is a carbon
compression post which runs from the
bow sprit to the rudder, bending in the
middle to accommodate the centre of
gravity aft of the mast. However the
foils add considerable weight to the
Foiler and so the hull beams are box
section.
