BASEBALL LEADING OFF
The Blue Devils opened the 2009 baseball season swinging for the
fences with high aspirations for potentially one of the most memorable
seasons in program history. Building upon a successful season a year
ago (38-17-1), head coach Sean McNally returns 21 letter-winners and
aims to take his squad to the ACC Tournament. A veteran squad with
plenty of power and experience at the plate, the team is bolstered by
2008 Texas Rangers Draft choice, Nate Freiman, a senior with a career
.358 batting average and over 125 RBI. On the other side of the ball,
the team is anchored by one of the best catchers in the ACC in Matt
Williams and Rawlings Gold Glove winner Alex Hassan. This
determined defense will back up 12 returning pitchers, includ-
ing Christopher Manno, who set a school record for strike-
outs per nine innings last season (12.27) and ace Andrew
Wolcott who maintained a 3.75 ERA through a team-high
69.2 innings. This skilled group certainly has the talent
to compete for the ACC Championship, which will be
played this year in our backyard at the Durham Bulls
