plastic plug in the hollowpoint. The hollowpoint does not plug with anything, yet the bullet expands reliably in soft targets, and the plug simply falls away. Their Critical Duty line also uses a similar FTX bullet. The FTX bullet is defi nitely worth a closer look in calibers that do not have enough energy to push a fully mush- roomed bullet deep enough into the target.


No mention could be made of Hornady Critical Defense ammo without also mentioning their Z-MAX line of ammo. For those prepping for the coming Apocalypse, the walking dead and the overall topic of zombies, Hornady offers the same FTX bullet, this time protected with a lime-green cavity plug. The Z-MAX Zombie ammo is available in most handgun and rifl e calibers and a few shotgun loads. The gelatin performance is identical to the Critical Defense ammo. Bullet tests on the undead were not performed.

In their Ultimate Defense ammo line, Remington loads the 102- grain Golden Saber, also known as a brass jacketed hollowpoint. While most JHPs use a gilding metal jacket (95 percent copper, 5 percent zinc), the Golden Saber uses a brass jacket (70 percent cop- per, 30 percent zinc). Brass is much harder than gilding metal. The Golden Saber brass jacket is cut and folded over itself in overlapping layers. As it expands, it opens like a shutter on the lens of a camera. The deep cuts in the jacket allow the brass jacketed Golden Saber to expand in soft targets as easily and reliably as any copper jacketed hollowpoint.

In their Elite Performance ammo line, Sig Sauer loads a 90-grain V- Crown JHP. The V-Crown bullet also has a pre-stressed lead core. The V-Crown bullet uses a ‘stacked’ hollowpoint cavity design: a shallow V-cavity on top of a deep but narrow I-cavity. The shallow cavity is used to keep it from being plugged. The deep I-cavity con- trols expansion and gives the core internal strength for penetrating harder objects. The V-Crown is a much more complicated design than it looks, and it performs extremely well.


The Speer LE 90-grain Gold Dot uses a copper electro-plated jacket, i.e., the pure copper is bonded to the lead core for the highest recovered weights of any bullet design. This load consistently penetrated 11 inches of gelatin.

In their Personal Protection ammo line, Speer LE loads a 90-grain version of their famous Gold Dot bullet. The Gold Dot was the fi rst JHP to use a pre-stressed lead core. The bullet expands predictably and evenly along the internal stress lines. The Gold Dot is also the fi rst copper-plated JHP. Instead of a separate jacket, pure copper is electro-plated to the lead core, and then the hollowpoint cavity is formed. The original “bonded” bullet, the jacket of the Gold Dot simply will not separate from the bullet core, no matter what the bullet strikes.

In their Defender Bonded ammo line, Winchester loads the 95-grain PDX1 JHP. This is a bonded version of the non-bonded Ranger T- series bullet widely used as a police duty bullet.


The Winchester Defender Bonded 95-grain PDX1 expanded to the largest recovered diameters of the test and still penetrated to the 8.5- to 9-inch depths.
