DID YOU KNOW? On a 50-yard shot, tour players can spin the ball upwards of 9,000 RPM.

Tip 2– LOWER THE LOFT Tip 1– SHALLOW CUT

To put this play into action, set up with the ball in the center of your stance, with your weight favoring your front foot. Make a controlled, upbeat swing that keeps the arms long throughout. This will make the club head sweep more across the turf versus crashing steeply into the ball. Although a small divot is acceptable, I really try to hit this shot with the mindset of taking no divot at all.

You might assume spin comes from a high launch; however, the reality is tour players are producing this result by hitting lower shots into the green. Through impact, try taking a little loft off the face. You’ll find a no divot strike with less loft will really make your ball check up. Catching the ball a little low on the face also increases spin. Known as vertical gear effect, low face hits reduce loft while increasing spin to generate stopping power. Make sure your grooves are clean and you’ve got a lie with little grass beneath the ball. Dirty grooves in long or wet grass reduce friction, lessening your ability to produce spin. The kind of ball you’re playing is also important. Read the performance characteristics of each ball before deciding on your purchase.
