ADVERTORIAL A SPECIAL SIDE OF MONTEREY

THE NEW NICKLAUS CLUB–MONTEREY OFFERS A UNIQUE AND WELCOMING EXPERIENCE IN ONE OF GOLF’S GREATEST DESTINATIONS

A

s a long time NCGA member and golf nut, I often organize my business travels in a way to visit new courses and experi-

ence the local culture. On my jour- neys, I’m constantly reminded that golfers everywhere share a special bond; there are no strangers on a golf course, just friends I haven’t met. My latest pilgrimage brought me

to Nicklaus Club–Monterey, where I arrived shortly before sundown to stay in the Nicklaus Lodge on the club’s property. It used to be called Pasadera Country Club, but with new involvement from Jack Nicklaus and a

change in ownership, the club has a new beginning and a new name. Having never been, I was overwhelmed by the quality of the clubhouse, the comfortable rooms available for members/guests, the gym, the two pool facilities, and of course, the golf course. However, it was the friendli- ness of the staff and members that left the best impression. When I stepped into the spec-

tacular clubhouse, I was shocked to see some old friends that are now in charge of the club: Chuck Dunbar, the former long-time head pro at Pebble Beach; James Kellogg, former GM at Tehama Golf Club; and Debbie Monti, a former Beach & Tennis Club executive. From what I heard from members, this dream team

of management has been leading a transformation of the club and excit- ing things are happening. After the proper pleasantries were

exchanged, my old friends suggested we set off for dinner to further catch up and meet some of the members. Chuck Dunbar told me the history of the 15-year old club and the $42 million 36,000 square foot Spanish- hacienda-styled clubhouse. The quality and attention to detail are impressive. Even the workout facility and pool house are built to a standard seldom seen in recent construction. Long time bartender, Eli, made the best Manhat- tan I’ve had outside of, well, Manhat- tan. Perhaps it was the “Nicklaus pours” of the libations, but I was very pleas- antly surprised by how many members
