Honoring the Man Who Made Poppy Ridge a Reality I


nfluential NCGA board member John Sirman practically lived


at Poppy Ridge while overseeing the construction of the Livermore course. His stewardship helped the NCGA become the first regional golf association in the country to own and operate two courses. Sir- man will be missed after passing away Aug. 21 at the age of 72, but his legacy lives on. Sirman (1943-2015) served on


the Architectural Committee that hired Rees Jones for the design and construction of Poppy Ridge,

Boone Named NCPGA Merchandiser of the Year


T


he man responsible for stocking the Poppy Hills golf shop with trendy and fashionable clothing and merchandise


was recognized by the Northern California PGA as the 2015 Public Course Merchandiser of the Year. Evan Boone, who has also worked as the head pro at


Bayonet/Black Horse GC and Pine Mountain Lake CC, loads up the golf shop with items from more than 50 manufacturers. “I didn’t do any of this alone,” Boone said. “You can’t do it all without great management and a great staff.”


and the two worked closely with project manager Hunter Gridley. Sirman served on the NCGA Board from 1992-1999, and the Poppy Holding Board from 1993- 1999. He was the chairman of the Poppy Holding Board from 1995-1999. Sirman enjoyed a standout


golf career at Fresno State from 1961-64, winning the individual conference title in 1964 and earn- ing All-American honors. Sirman also won Fresno City Amateur in 1961 and ’62, becoming the first


golfer to capture back–to back titles. He even played in the 1968 British Open at Carnoustie. You may remember Sirman


as the starter at Poppy Hills during the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, before he became the starter at the first tee at Pebble Beach. He was born in Fresno on


January 26, 1943. John is survived by his wife


Dorothy. Remembrances can be made to Youth on Course or The First Tee of Fresno.
