Tom Watson tees of No. 11 at Poppy Hills during the fi rst round of the First Tee Open.
Something special seems to happen when Tom Watson and Pebble Beach get together.
he 66-year-old Watson shot one stroke better than his age at Pebble Beach the Saturday of the Champions Tour’s Nature Valley First Tee Open, and nearly did it again in the fi nal round, ultimately falling one stroke shy of winner Esteban Toledo. Watson still managed to shoot the lowest round he’s ever played at the site of his 1982 U.S. Open victory, and strung together four birdies on the front nine Sunday to tie for the lead with Toledo. “I was just trying to shoot my age two days in a row,” Watson said. “I didn’t get it done. It was still
T
fun. You remember those times like 1982 and the positive shots. I had my opportunities.” A win would have been Watson’s fi rst on the Champions Tour since 2011. The 53-year-old Toledo
fi nished at 9-under after a closing 69 to pass second-round leader Colin Montgomerie. Junior Tour of Northern California member Jack Avrit won the junior-pro title by one stroke with Prince of Pebble Beach Mark O’Meara. Their opening 10-under 61 at Poppy Hills (when O’Meara had six birdies but only shot 1 under) was four strokes better than anyone in the fi eld.
