HEALTHY LIVING Tired of Being Tired?
4 supplements, along with a good diet, will help you feel more energetic. :: BY DAVID ALLIOT
F
ortunately, new research shows that fatigue is not only a real condition, but one you can do something about.
First, talk to your doctor about
simple tests that can help rule out basic causes, including hormonal imbalance, anemia, infections, or liver or kidney issues. Then turn to nature. This is what’s
new: Low energy and fatigue can be your body’s trillions of cells warning you about nutritional defi ciencies. After all, your cells rely on vitamins
and minerals to generate energy. Bad diets, toxic environmental exposures, and modifi ed food growing techniques can all lead to food stripped of its nutritional quality. Dr. David Brownstein, author of
the Dr. David Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter, focuses on nutritional defi ciencies. Every move you make depletes
those essential nutrients — and in many cases, as you age, your body has less of what it needs to thrive. That’s why replenishing vital
nutrients is critical to get back that energy and feel your best. While there are a great many
vitamins and minerals that will put pep back in your step, Brownstein focuses on “the big four” that he says make a big diff erence:
1
L-CARNITINE The National Institutes of Health
says, “Carnitine plays a critical role in energy production. “It is an essential cofactor that
helps transport long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria so that they can be oxidized to produce energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate [responsible for all muscle movements].”
2
EGCG (GREEN TEA EXTRACT) In a study published by The
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 10 healthy men who took green tea extract burned 4% more calories than those on placebo. In another involving 12 healthy men, fat oxidation increased by 17% with green tea extract, compared to placebo. To break it down, green tea
contains antioxidants called polyphenols. Epigallocatechin-3- gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant.
These polyphenols increase energy and excite cells into action.
3
COQ10 Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful
antioxidant which can fi ght damaging substances in your body called free radicals, which attack cell membranes, weakening cells. “CoQ10 is a substance that is necessary for energy production in every cell,” Brownstein says.
4
B12 Vitamin B12 breaks down the
foods we eat and turns them into energy. The energy produced is in the form
of “adenosine triphosphate” — think of this component as a form electricity that keeps your body humming. Vitamin B12 also supports the
formation of red blood cells — without which you could not live. That’s why medical professionals,
Brownstein included, recommend taking a supplement high in vitamin B12 to improve your energy levels. Take up to 1,000 mcg daily.
There are many reasons you might
experience tiredness, key among them is falling short on critical nutrients. Don’t accept a sudden drop in
energy as a product of getting older. These four nutrients can have a profound direct eff ect on your energy levels. They can improve your mood, too:
This combination can have an impact on serotonin, a chemical that regulates mood. Chances are, you’re going to feel great as you recover from fatigue.
