Book Excerpt And Thomas said it’s not only that
things such as polyamorous relation- ships and transgenderism are being cel- ebrated, but the biggest contemporary change is that advocates of those ideals now “demand” that others “accept what they believe” or else face being labeled as a racist or bigot. “There is so much anger in this coun-
try, and it doesn’t solve anything,” he said. “We don’t listen to each other any- more, and that’s a tragedy.” Thomas said he believes the “hour is
very late” when it comes to turning the country around. But he also maintains some hope for
the future and says the nation’s path could change through the “power of the individual” — something he said has been “ignored by a lot of people.” “The real power resides in each of
us, not the government,” Thomas said. “Yes, we are interested in the big pic- ture of what happens in Washington, but what we can aff ect starts with our families.”
What the Watchman Saw During 50 Years of Reporting on America
T
oday, truth has become relative and subjective, not objec- tive. Everyone claims to have his or her own “truth.” And don’t dare to use gender-specifi c pronouns without asking
another person which ones they prefer. You might be condemned by the ever-watchful speech police. As long as your “truth” makes you feel good, that is all that matters. If
someone else has a contrary “truth,” that’s OK, as long as they are happy. This leads to a culture that self-destructs over confusion as to what
it is and should be. A people must have a purpose, and a nation must have the goal of being able to defi ne itself and what it stands for (“to the Republic for which [the fl ag] stands” has been America’s). The goal of my columns is to remind people that immutable truths
exist and to ask them to consider even recent history in which certain programs and policies — such as tax cuts, less government spending, fewer regulations, and moral boundaries — contribute to the preserva- tion of our liberties. Football fi elds and basketball courts are defi ned by boundaries. If a
nation loses its boundaries, it will eventually cease to be. In ancient Israel, a watchman looked out for any threats that might come during the night when the city gates were closed. These might have included invading armies, or just someone out to rob, or cause harm to people or their property.
America has been invaded by a worldview contrary to our founding, and it is suff ering mightily as a result.
I have sought to play the role of a “watchman,” warn- ing readers what will happen if we refuse to embrace objective truth and apply it to ourselves, as well as our country.
These principles have been the driv- ing force behind my columns.

“ If one set of policies work, and Reagan’s did, largely, why would we then vote for politicians who have the opposite policies? That’s always been a curiosity to me.”
