The term refers to newspapers, television networks, and radio broadcasters — traditional outlets that dominated the media nationwide before the internet. Centralized out of New York and Los Angeles, the Big Three networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC — were the principal source of national and international news for radio and TV audiences across the country.
