Newsmax Poised for Significant Growth


CEO Chris Ruddy says incredibly successful IPO gives company capital to fuel expansion.

ewsmax is poised for sig- nificant growth and is already a major media player, says CEO Christo-


pher Ruddy. “We see ourselves as a growth


stock,” Ruddy told CNBC, as News- max launched its March 31 Initial Pub- lic Offering on the New York Stock Exchange. “We have the cable channel; we’re


still growing that. We have Newsmax2, our streaming channel. It’s reaching about 15 million people regularly. “We have the Newsmax Plus ser-


vice, which we see as a competitor to Netflix for family-friendly news and entertainment,” he added. Ruddy noted that he is running Newsmax on about $200 million a year in revenues and expenses. At the same time, he said, “CNN is spending bil- lions and billions” yet Newsmax is not far behind CNN in viewership. Ruddy also said Newsmax is reach-


ing through its cable channel and streaming Newsmax2 network about 30% of Fox News’ audience — and has done so with a relatively small amount

of capital for a media enterprise. Newsmax is already one of the fast- est-growing news media companies in the U.S. Last year a Reuters Institute study found it was a top 12 U.S. news brand. “In fact, we’re the No. 4 cable news


channel in the United States, right behind CNN; we’re No. 7 of all cable channels based on Nielsen’s coverage rat- ing,” Ruddy told CNBC. “I think it’s a pretty big achievement for a 10-year-old new cable company,” he added. “Our incredibly successful IPO, combined with our previous preferred offering, provides us with the capital and financial freedom to accelerate our growth initiatives, expand our pro- gramming, and further enhance our digital presence,” Ruddy said.


Newsmax originated as a digital


service in 1998 as Newsmax.com. It launched a cable news channel in 2014. It is the only digital media property to become a successful cable channel. “Everybody said, ‘Don’t do it; you’ll never get on cable systems; you’ll never get a license fee,’” Ruddy recalled. “Fox News had more than half


of the cable news market. I thought, Newsmax has a great digital brand in the center-right market, and they have no competition. I think there was a demand for more competition against Fox.


“Today we’re on every


major cable system. We get license fees from everybody. “We’ve had 300% revenue


growth over the past five years,” he said. “We’re up


almost 30% in revenue last year.” In an interview with CNN’s Brian


Stelter, Ruddy said that last year in the November election, Americans voted against the media establishment. This year “investors voted by enor-


mously buying Newsmax stock to say they like us, they value us, and they want us to grow.”
