Belly Fat Linked to Chronic Pain A
study published in regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine
found that excess abdominal fat is linked to widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain, especially in women. For the study, 32,409 men and women had MRI scans of their abdomens to determine the amount of fat around the abdominal organs (visceral adipose tissue, or VAT) and the amount of fat just under the skin (subcutaneous adipose tissue, or SAT) and were asked about pain in different areas of their bodies. Results revealed that women with high levels of VAT had twice the number of chronic pain sites as those with lower amounts of fat. “Reducing abdominal adiposity may be

OBESITY INCREASES RISK OF SECOND PRIMARY CANCERS
Adults who were overweight at the time of their first cancer diagnosis are at a higher risk of developing a second cancer, especially an obesity-related cancer like breast or colorectal cancer. Researchers at the American Cancer Society found that when compared with cancer survivors whose BMI was in the normal range, those who were overweight or obese had up
to a 34% increased risk of developing any form of cancer,
and up to a 78% increased risk of obesity-related cancers.
considered a target for chronic pain management,” according to researchers.
Women with high levels of VAT had twice the number of chronic pain sites as those with lower amounts of fat.
Body Roundness Helps Predict Cardio Risk

ody mass index (BMI) measures weight in relationship to height, while the body roundness index (BRI) measures abdominal obesity by combining waist circumference and height to reflect the proportion of abdominal and visceral fat. Some experts believe BRI is a better predictor of cardiovascular risk. An analysis of nearly 10,000 people older than 45 found that having a higher BRI increased a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 163%. “Our findings suggest that BRI measurements may potentially be used as a predictive factor for cardiovascular disease incidence,” said senior study author Yun Qian, M.D., Ph.D.

the journal Diabetes found healthy living may counteract the accelerated brain aging that is associated with Type 2 diabetes and
prediabetes. Brain scans of people with prediabetes
and Type 2 diabetes found their brains were 0.5 and 2.3 years older than their chronological age, respectively, while the brains of people with poorly controlled diabetes appeared more than four years older. However, the effects of diabetes were reduced in those who abstained from smoking and heavy drinking and were very active.
MENOPAUSE: HORMONE-FREE DRUG EASES HOT FLASHES A new drug that does not contain estrogen
reduced hot flashes in postmenopausal women. In two phase 3 double-blinded trials, women with moderate to severe hot flashes received either 120 mg of elinzanetant daily for 26 weeks, or a placebo for 12 weeks followed by 14 weeks of the hormone-free drug. In both trials, women who received elinzanetant reported rapid improvements in their symptoms within the first week and overall improvement in their quality of life by week 12.
BRAIN: TRAUMA ACCELERATES AGING Trauma, especially sexual trauma,
is associated with greater brain aging, according to a study of 250 women presented at the annual meeting of The Menopause Society. Researchers found that exposure to trauma was associated with inflammation in the brain and the death of neurons that was equal to three additional years of brain aging when compared to women who hadn’t experienced trauma.
FLU: HIGH-DOSE VACCINE BEST FOR SENIORS High-dose and adjuvanted flu vaccines
increased protection against flu and hospitalization for people 65 years and older, according to a study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases. When compared to a standard dose flu vaccine, high-dose and adjuvanted flu vaccine reduced hospitalization for flu by approximately 25% and 62%, respectively.
