hen it comes to new Year’s resolutions, many Americans begin January by
resolving to lose weight, exercise more, and eat better to become healthier and look better in the new year and beyond. “The good news is that we have
tremendous power over our health and longevity and that the vast majority of premature death and disability is preventable with a healthy enough diet and lifestyle,” says Michael Greger, M.D., author of How Not to Die and other health books. “The No. 1 cause of premature death and disability in the United States

are top protein sources, rather than animal protein, in areas of exceptional health and longevity around the world. Eat more fruit and vegetables. Eat more whole grains in place of
the refined grains that are in most processed food. Eat more nuts. Eat less meat. Cut down on sugary drinks
such as soda. This doesn’t mean that you can’t
eat meat or other animal foods — unless that’s your preference. For most people, it means replacing some animal foods with plant proteins. For example, if meat is the main
ingredient in your usual dinner, try one dinner with legumes for protein. Most people need to eat more
vegetables. A variety of brightly colored ones is not only good for the internal function of your body, it can also give your skin a healthy glow. Diets consisting
mostly of whole foods, with or without animal foods,
help to reduce internal damage that speeds up aging.
HOW MUCH EXERCISE? For anyone who isn’t physically active, any amount of additional movement can make them look and feel better. But for most adults of any age,
