A roundup of what vision companies will be concentrating on moving into 2019

50 Leader Greg Blackman All change

he machine vision market is changing in some substantial ways. Firstly, it’s consolidating – at a rough count there were

almost a dozen acquisitions from the summer of 2017 until September 2018 – which points to a maturing market, as well as indicating how desirable industrial vision technology has become. Good advice for those thinking about mergers and acquisitions can be found in the article on page 4, and on page 8 from Gabriele Jansen who runs an M&A advisory firm. Te second big change is in the technology,

with advances being made in areas like embedded computing and deep learning to name two. Both will impact industrial vision to some extent, although the degree of which remains to be seen. Keely Portway on page 12 discusses how embedded vision and other factors could alter the business models by which machine vision companies operate, while on page 16 Basler’s Arndt Bake gives his view on what embedded vision start-ups can learn from machine vision. China is also a relatively new and rapidly growing market for European machine vision firms; the articles on pages 24 and 26 discuss doing business in China. Te Yearbook also contains articles on

attracting investment (page 18), vision data management (page 28), and embedded vision and OPC UA standards (page 40). Manufacturing is becoming much more automated – OPC UA hopes to facilitate this – and machine vision looks set to play a big role in the factories of the future.
