smartphones dream of electric sheep?

The old ‘counting sheep’ technique kind of indicates that even before the over-stimulation of a hundred TV channels, the infinite scroll and hyper sugary diets, our ancestors may have struggled to get to sleep as much as we do.

White noise machines and meditation techniques are helpful for some, but if you’re like me, the distraction of bantering podcast hosts or a slightly terrible eti show is what does the trick. The problem, however, is that unless you’re rehashing older content to nod off to, you’re

STREAMING You may have missed

setting yourself up to sleep through things you don’t want to miss, yet need to at the same time. You’ll also risk waking up later on to turn your phone, tablet or TV off, not to mention stopping your device itself from resting.

This is why sleep timers are so useful. If you use Apple or Google Podcasts or Spotify, you’ve probably noticed these apps have them built- in: simply start playing a podcast or music and instruct the app to stop it after a set amount of time. This way, you won’t suddenly end up four episodes deep in your queue with no memory of where you were when you were awake.

But what about streaming services? While eti is currently testing out an in-built sleep timer, Apple users don’t need to wait. You may not have realised it, but you can use the Timer function of the Clock app to do the job already: just go to Timer and set ‘When The Timer Ends’ to ‘Stop Playing’ to close any media playing after a time of your choosing. Or, for those of you who like to kip on the sofa or have a TV in your bedroom, some smart TVs also have the same function in their settings. Sweet dreams for both you and your tech.

INVENTING ANNA Dir. David Frankel, Tom Verica, Daisy von

Scherler, Ellen Kuras, Nzingha Stewart (9 x 52-82 min episodes)

Is hustle culture destroying millennials? Is girl- boss feminism toxic or women’s only recourse in a patriarchal capitalist society? Is it a crime to pursue the American dream? All of these ques- tions and more are raised by the latest Shonda- landeti collab, but the answers are left for you – and struggling magazine writer Vivian ent, the fictionalised version of the ournalist who profiled nna elvey – to work out. elvey was valorised as a modern Robin Hood after be- ing sent to prison for scamming New York’s elite in 2019. Ethics aside, she’s fascinating fodder for this soapy drama, heightened by an apparently “authentic” Russian/German/New York accent bordering on Tommy Wiseau.

BETTER CALL SAUL, S6a Dir. Michael Morris, Gordon Smith, Ann

(13 x 41-60 min episodes)

If sequels to successful properties are hard, prequels are downright hellacious. And yet, having already established itself as one of the best TV shows of the millennium golden era, Breaking Bad has also become a prequel mould- breaker. The Bob Odenkirk-starring spinoff has seen the actor and heart attack survivor reprise his role as criminal defence attorney Saul Goodman for seven years. That’ll come to an end soon with Season 6, leaving behind a world- building masterclass.

Season 2, what a concept! That is, presumably, what the time-challenged Nadia Vulvokov might say should she find out that she’s being forced to relive another season of endless looping. Three years is a while to wait, and given how good the first was – following the chainsmoking-voiced Nadia as she Groundhog Days her way through a perpetual party that always ends in her death – expectations are high. Maybe our real-life time-distorting event will make it more relata- ble…
