West (26th – 28th Apr) is a celebration of the life and music of Irish fiddle player Julia Clifford, who helped define what is now a well-known genre of Irish traditional music. Taking place in Stowmarket in Suffolk, the line- up of guests includes Julia’s son Billy Clifford, Matt Cranitch, Jackie Daly, Bryan O’Leary, Gerry Harrington, Peter Browne, Jerry O’Reilly, Aoife Ni Chaoimh, Paudie O’Connor, Maire O’Keefe, Connie O’Connell and more. The event will include concerts, talks and presentations, workshops, set dancing, CD launch, a photographic exhibition, an archive film showing, pub session trail and visit to Julia’s grave.

Martyn’s music to mark ten years since his death with a line-up including Paul Weller, Lucy Rose, Eddi Reader, Ross Wilson, Rory Butler, Eric Bibb, John Smith and Katie Spencer, directed by Teddy Thompson, and collaborative show 50 Years Of The Beatles’ Abbey Road with a host of special guests including KT Tunstall, The Staves, You Tell Me, Peter Brewis and Sarah Hayes. Also on the bill is an event to celebrate Welsh music curated by Gwyneth Glyn, and Oran Bagraidh, a collaborative concert exploring themes of multiple identities through music and traditional poetry, including artists and poets Josie Duncan, Lorcan Mac Mathuna, Gwyneth Glyn, Dominic Mac Giolla Bhríde, Conor Caldwell, Barnaby Brown, MacGillivray, Rody Gorman and Bragod.

From artists who have influenced the current scene, to musicians who are redefining the music of tomorrow, Celtic Connections 2019 will continue to embrace a huge range of styles and genres that showcase artists and cultures from across the world. For example, our strand ‘Above the Surface’ will welcome a host of one-off performances, including Scotland’s Kathleen MacInnes performing with Iceland’s amiina, Bassekou Kouyate and his band Ngoni Ba with Gaelic group SIAN, Rachel Sermanni and Jarlath Henderson performing alongside the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as well as Karine Polwart and Kris Drever who will also perform alongside the SCO. Scottish rising stars Snuffbox will play with jazz pianist Zoe Rahman and Duncan Lyall will perform his new show Milestone.”
