Rocket Launcher a dozen leading questions to fire at Maarja Nuut

If you were given the funds to organise a concert bill, who would the artists be?

Glenn Gould, Nina Simone, Anthony Linell, Maria Faust, some old khanty music and finish it off with sweet sounds from Connan Mockasin.

Which totally obscure record do you most treasure and would like more people to know about?

Dawn Of Midi Dysnomia. It’s not very obscure though.

What was the best live gig you ever saw?

Luckily there are a few ones that have really moved me in different ways but a four-hour-long concert by Ustad Sayeedud- din Dagar in New Dehli was a true experi- ence.

And what was the worst?

There’s no bad weather, only inappro- priate clothing. Same with other stuff too. But being honest, I’m a pretty picky listener, especially when it comes to all sorts of galas…

What was your own best ever gig? Best ever is always my intention but

there’s quite a way to go still. And what was your worst?

The one that I have no clear memory of. After playing a gig somewhere in Nether- lands (with nearly no sleep the previous night), resting about two-and-a-half hours in a hotel-like building, then travelling twenty-six hours to the West Coast, sleeping three hours, off to run a workshop, then rest about an hour, soundcheck and the concert…

What’s the professional achievement you’re most proud of?

This question led me to Googling what does ‘being proud of’ mean as I find it hard to relate to this. After spending half an hour reading about from where the word derives, looking at the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definitions and having a mono- logue about my healthy or not healthy self- esteem I still can’t relate to it.

What’s the most embarrassing thing you ever did in public?

Shouting in a torment of PMS at a fel- low driver in the middle of an intersection and then realising that I was the one who misread the traffic signs.

Which song or piece of music would you most like to have written yourself?

4’33 by John Cage. But my score would look different.

Who was the first musician or singer you were inspired to emulate?

One of my first violin teachers. The way he talked about music made everything sound like magic, even before an actual sound was made. So I was actually inspired by his approach and sort of rituality while making music.

Who was the last-but-one musician or singer you lusted after?

Saw Kadhja Bonet playing in NY last week, she’s pretty sexy I think. My prefer-

ences vary quite a bit when it comes to the ones who are not my one and only.

If you had a rocket launcher, who or what would be the target, and why?

I’d tie the Flat-Earthers to the rocket and launch the whole bunch into space. It might lead to a new perspective.
