Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening
As part of Kings Place’s year-long series focusing on the creative firepower of women composers, Venus Unwrapped, Rachel Newton curates a Trad. Reclaimed: Women In Folk weekend
focused on female instrumentalists and singers from the folk scene. It includes a rare appearance from Shirley Collins, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening, The Shee Big Band, Rheingans Sisters, Emily Portman, Hannah James’ Jig Doll, Solasta and a project paying tribute to Margaret Barry, She Moved Through The Fair (written by Colin Irwin and Irish singer Mary McPartlan, and with a cast including Lisa Knapp, Gerry Diver, Gillian Horgan and Luke MacLeod, as well as Colin and Mary.
Rachel Newton writes: “Festivals I've attended over the years often feature a large number of all- male acts or bands where the only woman on stage is the singer. I wanted to curate an event that redresses that balance and features some of the brilliant women making music in the folk and traditional scene. As well as performances from the likes of Kathryn Tickell, The Rheingans Sisters and Hannah James, there will be talks from Emily Portman, Shirley Collins and a celebration of the legendary Margaret Barry. The Shee Big Band will perform our first full show and we'll also hear from up-and-coming band Solasta.” [You can read about them elsewhere this issue and hear a track on the fRoots 71 compilation.]
