Richard Mitchell heads up the company’s Fire Safety team, which


provides fi re risk assessments and training for fi re wardens, as well as the installation and maintenance of fi re alarm systems, extinguishers and fi re blankets, fi re signage and emergency lighting, and fi re door and fi re hydrant safety checks. “From the fi rst Fire Risk Assessment we work with the client to

Security approach is to fi nd a solution to any premises or conditions that arise – as the team’s work within a local food company illustrates. When TEC Fire & Security was awarded the fi re alarm maintenance


contract at a vegetable storage, packaging and distribution facility, there already existed a good fi re alarm system that was well installed. However, as is often the case with this kind of chilled warehouse


storage, moisture and condensation often results in false activations and creates regular problems. As a major seven day a week operation, the client processes a huge tonnage of produce and any triggering of the alarm system, without good cause, delays production.


In May 2018, a refrigerated trailer parked near


one of the warehouses caught light due to a fault within the refrigeration unit and the warehouse and its loading docks were destroyed. As part of the process of rebuilding, the client,


took the opportunity to upgrade a number of areas of their operation and called on TEC to complete an in-depth review of the company’s needs both immediate and for the foreseeable future. Richard specifi ed a state-of-the-art air sampling


smoke detection system, choosing Wagner as the supply partner of choice. An air sampling system gives a much earlier warning than conventional detectors, reducing the risk and generating an earlier reaction to fi re, minimising damage. Due to the inbuilt technology, false alarms are eliminated as the system distinguishes the diff erence between smoke and dust, dirt and exhaust gases. Another advantage for the client is that the


broad operating parameters means the detectors can be used at temperatures as low as -40°C and up as high as 60°C, while the system is unobtrusive, with the air sampling points virtually invisible and the detection sensory processors installed out of sight, such as in the ceiling void. Richard added: “Different companies have


diff erent needs, but with the right expert advice, we can find a system that is suitable for their working environment, working with the client to reduce the amount intrusion and hassle, and the loss of productivity that goes with that, without compromising on the safety of those in the building.”
