Raw TV won the vote of its peers to pick up the 2020 Best Indie Bulldog Award after some outstanding recent work including Don’t F*ck With Cats, Three Identical Strangers, Fear City and American Animals. Founder Dimitri Doganis explains the singular focus behind the company’s success
On winning the Best Indie vote in the 2020 Bulldogs, Raw founder Dimitri Doganis says he hopes the vote comes from the quality of the indie’s output. “When I look at other companies I admire, I’m drawn to them by the work they do and by the way that people talk about their experiences there.”
But another reason its industry peers vote for the indie is its success in breaking into different markets. First long-running US series like Gold Rush, and latterly into both factual and fiction theatrical features and the all-important major doc series for the streamers. “We’ve been very fortunate,” says Doganis. “but also we’ve been quite focused on where the
opportunities are for the most innovative and creative projects.” And that focus came from a realisation in recent years that “the middle was going be a much tougher place to do business. And that it made more sense to be at either the premium or the volume end of things. And that we were much better placed to push on the premium side of things in terms of our factual work.”
A singular vision But that premium work for the streamers is mainly a byproduct of the indie’s creative ambitions, says Doganis. “Who’s going to let us give this thing the most ambitious realisation of it? Where can we get this to be the best version of itself? That
