whether it be talent changing or because judges have left or dancers have left. Obviously, we have a fresh cast every year as well. But we also have updated other aspects. The set is updated, the way we do the VTs is updated as is the lighting and fresh music choices.” Strictly had to take a break during 2020 and was replaced with a series of archive-based specials which gave the team a chance to watch that evolution. “You don’t realise year on year the changes that are being made until you look back over five years, and then you realise that actually, we have made quite a lot.”
But the trick is, says James, to make sure those changes are “digestible for the audience. They’re
small steps and overall, the format has always stayed true. And we haven’t made changes for the sake of making changes.” Evolution, not revolution, is key. “because at the same time as we want to invite younger audiences in we also know how much families and people of all ages enjoy the show. So it’s about making sure that there’s still something for everybody.”
Adding polish But it’s the overall look of the show that has altered most and the “size and scale of the set. Before the judges were all squashed around a tiny little desk. it was quite surprising when you look back at it and every year, we’re trying to

take that up a notch.”
And not rest on any laurels. “It is a well-oiled machine in terms of we know what we need to achieve every week, and every person is really at the top of their game, but I almost put more pressure on myself to make sure that the next one is always better. We’re always pushing ourselves to make sure the show gets better and better.”
