Producer Sarah Hammond explains how the second series of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag continued to masterfully walk the tightrope between comedy and pathos
Fleabag, the show based on Phoebe Waller- Bridge’s one-woman stage show, has been a major critical and commercial smash with its creator, writer and star, Waller-Bridge, and the cast and production team. picking up a raft awards including Baftas, Emmys and Golden Globes across its two seasons. Two Brothers Pictures’ exec, Sarah Hammond, who produced season two of the show where Fleabag falls for the ‘hot priest,’ says the show resonates with audiences so much because viewers “can’t help but fall in love with Fleabag. She’s flawed like all of us. Phoebe brings you in to her world in her performance, she makes you feel safe with her humour and her observations on the world, then she breaks your heart - just when you least expect it.”
Familiarity breeds success The show brought the majority of the cast and crew from series one back for series two. “We really are a family, it’s a joy to work with everyone on this show,” says Hammond. And that familiarity breeds success, she says: “I think because everyone had worked together on season one, there was a short hand to series two which hugely helped.”
WE REALLY DIDN’T CHANGE ANYTHING IN TERMS OF THE DNA OF THE SHOW
And as the first series had been such a creative success, why change for season two? “We wanted to preserve everything we loved about series one, we really didn’t change anything
