GREAT FACTUAL
Our Planet, Netflix
When it first aired in 2019, it went out in 190 countries - “something only a streamer can offer” says Fothergill. By that time, Netflix had around 150m subscribers and it reached around 45m households in the first month. The series took more than 600 crew members and four years of filming in 50 different countries. It was largely shot in 4K UHD, mastered in 4K with a HDR finish and Dolby Atmos surround-sound track. “It was amazing to deliver a series in full 4K HDR,” says Fothergill. “It’s second to none.” Raiding the cutting-edge technology toolkit, the series used drones and a Cineflex gryo-stabilised gimbal was adapted to a snow vehicle. “It allowed the audience to really walk in the footsteps of the polar bears.”
Message received Partnership with the WWF was critical. “We needed their conservation experience and their scientific experience,” says Fothergill. WWF also joined forces for a dedicated platform to tell online stories behind key sequences from the series that delivered a wider environmental story. Research from the World Wide Fund for Nature in Summer of 2019 showed over two thirds of viewers claimed that the Netflix original documentary series provided them with a greater understanding of the impact humans have had on the environment and the critical need to protect the planet. The series was given a royal send off at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2019,
with Prince William interviewing the series narrator David Attenborough. Netflix has since joined with Silverback on a feature doc with Attenborough, A Life on Our Planet, released in September 2020 and two smaller films, funded privately, using the Our Planet footage and aimed at the finance industry and the world of business. As Fothergill says, “If the aim is to move the dial about planetary understanding of the global crisis, for us and for the WWF, it’s all come together.” Winning awards might be of secondary importance in the midst of all this, but Fothergill is delighted about the Televisual Bulldog Award. “It matters a lot as it’s almost the only one award that is from your peers.”
